ILLUMINATION AT GETTYSBURG - 6/30

Provide by Tom Rose, SA, T255, thomas.rose@starpower.net, 301-807-6441.
Here is a wonderful opportunity to participate in an illumination at Gettysburg June 30.  My Troop 255 has done this 3 times on the annual Remembrance Day each November that commemorates Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.  We stay at the Artillery Ridge Campground that borders the battlefield nearby (on the site of the Union artillery park – assembly area for reserve artillery). Here is a note from the organizer.
-----
2013 marks a special year in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania as we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The Gettysburg Foundation is hosting a 150th Commemorative Illumination from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on June 30, 2013 at Soldiers’ National Cemetery to pay tribute to the more than 3,500 soldiers who fought and were killed in Gettysburg in 1863. At the illumination, a luminary is placed on each of the 3,500 gravestones and throughout the walkways of the cemetery.

The Gettysburg Foundation invites you to assist us in making this event a success. The Gettysburg Foundation relies heavily on volunteerism to make these events happen. Volunteers are needed to help set-up and clean-up the cemetery. The set-up will be from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and include placing luminaries on each gravestone, filling the luminaires with a candle and a block to support the candle, and lighting the candles. Clean-up will begin at 10:30 p.m. and last about an hour. At clean-up, we will extinguish all the candles and collect the trash.

To register your troop, or if you have any questions, please call me at 717-339-2148 or contact me via e-mail at aswade@gettysburgfoundation.org.

BOY SCOUTS & LDS
On May 21, 1913, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officially
affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America. Since the beginnings of that dynamic partnership, millions of youth and adults have registered as participants and leaders in LDS Church-sponsored Scouting units, and leaders of the two organizations have worked together to instill character, citizenship and fitness in young men.

“Impossible to measure is the great good that has come from [Scouting] during the past century. Skills have been learned, values have been established, good deeds have been done, and lives have been enriched.”

                  –President Thomas S. Monson, 2010

Worth a click "100 Years of Scouting in the LDS Church - A Timeline"
 http://ldsbsa.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Scout-Timeline-Jan-21-2013.pdf

Actually this Timeline starts in 1875, goes through 1899: Robert Baden-Powell
writes "Aids to Scouting", 1910: William D. Boyce incorporates the Boy Scouts of
America thanks to a good turn from an unknown English Scout, 1913 LDS Church
joins the Boy Scouts of America as BSA's first chartered organization, and on
and on through a fascinating 4 page pdf document.
