LIFE TO EAGLE SEMINAR
This Sunday, April 7 from 1-3 PM. If you are a Life Scout (or close) and haven't yet been to a Life-to-Eagle training, I'd recommend a Life-to-Eagle training if possible. It will give you a good base for understanding the long process to successfully completing your Eagle project (and all the paperwork that goes along with it!).

This weekend's session is pretty close - up at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney.

Information is at the following link (you need to send them an email to let them know you'll be attending): Life to Eagle (L2E) Conference

LOOKING FOR YOUTH VOLUNTEERS!

Cub Scout Day Camp is the week of June 17 - 21 at the Gaithersburg Lois Green Izaac Walton League. Adult and Youth staff must be at camp each day from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. unless special arrangements are made in advance. There will be a half hour lunch and we're pleased to announce that lunch will be the same as in past years. The camp will buy the main dish and staff can bring side dishes and desserts if you would like to join us for lunch. You are always welcome to pack your own lunch.

Camp for the Cub Scouts is from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. We need Scouts to volunteer as den chiefs who travel with Cub Scout groups and parents to the different stations throughout the week (normally that's 1st year camp Scouts who have never volunteered at camp before), help the adult volunteers run a station, and assist staff at headquarters as a Program Assistant (for example, filling up the station's water jugs through out the day). Scouts have to be 14 years of age or older to assist at BBs and Archery.

The theme this year is Wild West. Here are the stations: Crafts, Field Sports, Archery, BBs, Fishing, and Theme (includes nature, Native American lore, Western lore.

All attached forms will be turned in to me, Debbie Metrey. They can be mailed to 18508 Meadowland Terrace, Olney, MD 20832, delivered in person to my address, or scanned and sent via computer. Each Scout needs to complete a BSA Medical form (Parts A & B) with a copy of the front and bank of their insurance card and updated immunizations, a signed 2013 Staff Agreement, and a completed 2013 Staff Application form. All forms are attached to this email. I do take requests as to where volunteers wish to work during the week, but I make the final placements so we have enough staff covering all the areas throughout the camp.

Mark your calendars! Staff training will be held both the Saturday and Sunday prior to the start of camp (June 15 and June 16). We'll also be setting up ranges and stations. Staff are required to attend at least one of those days unless special arrangements are made in advance. SSL hours will be available for youth staff that can help set up camp after training is complete that weekend.

If you have general questions about the program or have other questions about day camp, please contact Carlos Salazar, who is in charge of day camp this year at Carlos.Salazar@scouting.org.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Metrey
Youth Coordinator

AN UNDERGROUND HIKE?

Well, not exactly.....The Underground Railroad Experience Trial is right nearby. An easy  hike, this trail recreates what a slave attempting to escape might have experienced on his way to freedom. If you start at Woodlawn Manor go to the Sandy Spring, and return, it's about 3 miles round trip. If you drop off at Woodlawn and pick up at the   Quaker  Friends Meeting House, about 2 plus miles one way. Bear in mind, Friends have their religious service on Sunday morning.

"The time is the 1850s. The Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, have helped make Sandy Spring a prosperous farming and commercial center. The Friends Meeting House, built in 1817, is the center of religious and community life. Even though slavery will not be abolished in Maryland until 1864, Maryland Quakers outlawed the owning of slaves by its members in 1777. In Sandy Spring, free blacks own their own homes and have organized churches, schools, and an array of social clubs although such public gatherings are extremely dangerous in this anti-abolitionist county.

Local patrols and slave catchers stalk the fields and woods. Quakers and free blacks assist escaping slaves via the secret “Underground Railroad”— a system of people and places organized to help slaves escape to freedom. Now you must travel through woods and skirt the edges of farm fields to safely reach the Sandy Spring itself. Can you do it? "

Guided hikes every Saturday morning, beginning in April.  Or, arrange your own hike, use the online guidelines:

"GOD AND WORLD" AWARD

The Baltimore Area Council is sponsoring a new award to foster greater understanding among people.

This new award is entitled the   "  God and  World  "  award. It may be earned by any Scout , thru study and reflection.  It does not require the Scout to question his own faith, but learn about that of others. "A Scout is Reverent" often means that to be respectful of others'  beliefs , one must know what those beliefs are.  Here is a way to show one's understanding.
