WHITE OAK BUDDY HIKE

2013 Buddy Hike, Saturday May 4, step-off 9 am-noon from Woodside Methodist Church, 8900 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD, for The Silver Spring-Sligo Creek Historical Trail

--Hunt for the oldest dates in two historic grave yards,
--Learn about the founding fathers and mothers who lived in what is now Silver Spring,
--Walk over, under and along the railroad tracks that brought prosperity and growth north of the capitol city,
--Hear about the church that was mounted on rolling logs and pulled to a new home by a team of horses,
--See the graves of Civil War soldiers who fought and died along Georgia Ave.,
--Figure out the road names that reference our rural past,
--Explore the eccentric buildings of the National Park Seminary,
--Hunt for stones that were moved from a Grand Estate and incorporated into suburban homes,
--Read about a bank robbery and shoot-out in downtown Silver Spring,
--Explore the newest pedestrian bridges that make it easy for walkers and bikers to get around town.

Join us for all this and more on the 2013 White Oak Buddy Hike, Saturday, May 4, beginning at 9 am.
The hike will begin in the parking lot of the Woodside Methodist Church on Georgia Avenue, just north of Spring Street. Hikers and bikers can step off any time between 9 AM and noon using the maps we will provide at the registration desk. All paid registrations ($5) will receive a commemorative patch, map, and bottle of water.

This year's route will be the Silver Spring-Sligo Creek Historical Hike, which winds all around our familiar neighborhoods, highlighting historical sites and stories you probably didn't know were there. Hikers can chose one of two options, a northern wing and a southern wing, each one 5-6 miles long. If you hiked one wing last year, this year you can hike the other. Or do both for a 10-mile hike.

Originally laid out as an Eagle project in 1985, the trail includes Revolutionary War-era and Civil War-era cemeteries, two historic churches and one historic synagogue, historic photos and paintings of Silver Spring mounted around town, and lots of stories about our area's early settlers. Since it takes participants on sidewalks, bike paths, and city streets, it is suitable for hikers of all ages and older bikers. But close supervision of small children is a must.

LIFE TO EAGLE SEMINAR
If you are a Life Scout (or close) and haven't yet been to a Life-to-Eagle training, you should attend a Life-to-Eagle training if possible. It will give you a good base for understanding the long process to successfully completing your Eagle project (and all the paperwork that goes along with it!).

The next session is Sunday 4/21 at Montgomery General Hospital, first floor conference room.  Montgomery General is located off Route 108 in Olney.

Information is at the following link (you need to send them an email to let them know you'll be attending): Life to Eagle (L2E) Conference

LOOKING FOR YOUTH VOLUNTEERS!

Cub Scout Day Camp is the week of June 17 - 21 at the Gaithersburg Lois Green Izaac Walton League. Adult and Youth staff must be at camp each day from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. unless special arrangements are made in advance. There will be a half hour lunch and we're pleased to announce that lunch will be the same as in past years. The camp will buy the main dish and staff can bring side dishes and desserts if you would like to join us for lunch. You are always welcome to pack your own lunch.

Camp for the Cub Scouts is from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. We need Scouts to volunteer as den chiefs who travel with Cub Scout groups and parents to the different stations throughout the week (normally that's 1st year camp Scouts who have never volunteered at camp before), help the adult volunteers run a station, and assist staff at headquarters as a Program Assistant (for example, filling up the station's water jugs through out the day). Scouts have to be 14 years of age or older to assist at BBs and Archery.

The theme this year is Wild West. Here are the stations: Crafts, Field Sports, Archery, BBs, Fishing, and Theme (includes nature, Native American lore, Western lore.

All attached forms will be turned in to me, Debbie Metrey. They can be mailed to 18508 Meadowland Terrace, Olney, MD 20832, delivered in person to my address, or scanned and sent via computer. Each Scout needs to complete a BSA Medical form (Parts A & B) with a copy of the front and bank of their insurance card and updated immunizations, a signed 2013 Staff Agreement, and a completed 2013 Staff Application form. All forms are attached to this email. I do take requests as to where volunteers wish to work during the week, but I make the final placements so we have enough staff covering all the areas throughout the camp.

Mark your calendars! Staff training will be held both the Saturday and Sunday prior to the start of camp (June 15 and June 16). We'll also be setting up ranges and stations. Staff are required to attend at least one of those days unless special arrangements are made in advance. SSL hours will be available for youth staff that can help set up camp after training is complete that weekend.

If you have general questions about the program or have other questions about day camp, please contact Carlos Salazar, who is in charge of day camp this year at Carlos.Salazar@scouting.org.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Metrey
Youth Coordinator
Cub Scout Day Camp

LOOKING FOR LAGOMORPH LOVERSIL

NATIONAL CAPITOL RABBIT BREEDERS ASSOCIATION SEEK SCOUTS TO HELP

Here is an opportunity for Scouts interested in animals (rabbits, especially!) to join with and help like minded folks. There used to be (darn!) a Rabbit Breeding Merit Badge, but no more!   Pet Care Merit Badge, Animal Science, are still possibilities.
The NCRBA hosts the Rabbit Barn at the Montgomery County Fair  every year.
If you would like to learn more about these wonderful little critters, call Venture Scout Joe Lehman or his mom, Margo Lehman, at 301.774.7561 for all the information.
Science fair project? Can't do better than Rabbit Genetics!
You do not need to have a rabbit to participate or help!
The NATIONAL CAPITOL RABBIT BREEDERS ASSOCIATION ( http://ncrba.home.mindspring.com/ )   is having it's annual show and fund raising raffle  at the County Fair Grounds on 11 May and could use help on the evening of Friday 10 May to set up and on Saturday 11 May for the show . Rabbits and rabbit lovers from far and wide will be in attendance.  Snack bar for lunch on the premises! Can you help?.
Call the Lehmans if you are at all interested!

James E. Lehman, Jr.
  Commissioner,
"GOD AND WORLD" AWARD

The Baltimore Area Council is sponsoring a new award to foster greater understanding among people.

This new award is entitled the   "  God and  World  "  award. It may be earned by any Scout , thru study and reflection.  It does not require the Scout to question his own faith, but learn about that of others. "A Scout is Reverent" often means that to be respectful of others'  beliefs , one must know what those beliefs are.  Here is a way to show one's understanding.
